While other artists were busy partying and enjoying the festivities of the 2012 Grammy Awards, a certain diva was focusing on her craft. Mariah Carey visited a voice and ear specialist in New York City last evening for a routine checkup.

Struggling to avoid the photographers, Carey was “heartbroken” by the recent passing of her friend and onetime collaborator Whitney Houston. The two singers were regularly compared to each other because of their massive vocal ranges and incredible control but maintained a private friendship away from the media spotlight.

Carey has been busy recording her new studio album with the help of Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat, Big Jim Wright, Randy Jackson and several others. Yet, many wonder if she still has the vocal chops to dominate the music scene in the manner that she did during her early career.

Nick Cannon Praises 'Hero' Mariah Carey After His Health Ordeal

Just over a week after being hospitalized for "mild kidney failure,” Nick Cannon stepped out for the first time with wife Mariah Carey – and praised her for being his "hero" during the ordeal.

"When times are hard, you guys don't see her at 3 o'clock in the morning, getting up in the middle of the night, fixing me soup when my kidneys ain't acting right. Mariah Carey does that,” Cannon, 31, said onstage before presenting his wife with the Entertainer Award at the 2012 BET Honors taping, held Saturday in Washington, D.C. The show will air Feb. 13 at 9 p.m.

Holding 8-month-old son Moroccan – dressed in a matching mini tux – Cannon gushed over Carey and at times appeared emotional as he reflected on the woman he calls "my angel."

"It is truly, truly a blessing to be here tonight, and I am humbled and in awe of everyone's presence, but mostly my hero right there," he said as Carey, 42, looked on from the front row.

"What most people don't get the opportunity to experience is the true woman; the virtuous person who is my angel."

A teary-eyed Carey soon returned the adoration, thanking God for having her husband and baby by her side.

"To my incredible husband who [has been] out of the hospital two days – look at him all strong and healthy and big and too buff for the tux – it's incredible," she beamed.

On the mend, Cannon even did an impromptu performance: beatboxing for his son.

"This is what makes Roc the most happy," said Carey, dressed in a form-fitting black and nude-colored gown. "And Miss Monroe Cannon's backstage, darling. We were both sewn into our dresses, so she couldn't make it out."

Christmas wouldn’t be the same if I didn’t spend it with my Christmas family, Mr and Mrs Cannon (Mariah and Nick) and their extended family annually in Aspen. This year was as wonderful as past years where we attend Midnight Mass, ride horse sleighs through the snow, take the dogs (JJ, Cha Cha Jill E Beans and crew) for their snowy walks, go to the top of mountains and watch as skiers and snowboarders do their thing, visit Joan Boyce’s diamond store, eat Mariah’s delicious home cooked treats and decorate the Christmas tree!

As if those treats weren’t enough, this year we were joined by 2 new additions that had been in mummy’s tummy last Christmas- the Cannon baby twins otherwise known as Ms Monroe and Moroccan Scott aka #dembabies!. Many fun hours playing, feeding and cuddling were had by us all! -What an amazing way to kick off 2012-being Auntie Jasmine to 2 little gorgeous bundles of fun! Give me another couple of years and I will have them putting on English accents and playing dress up!! sadly nick then came down with a kidney problem and was hospitalised-get well soon brother! London wants to see you out here soon with your Mrs when you come to do your comedy specials!

Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon "Closer Than Ever" After Illness

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey really do love each other in sickness and in health!

The America's Got Talent host's father, James Cannon, told Us Weekly Tuesday that Nick's recent hospitalization for mild kidney failure only strengthened his son's relationship with Carey.

"Nick and Mariah have a very strong bond," James said. "If anything, this unexpected illness has made them closer than ever and appreciate one another even more."

"She would stay in the hospital overnight to support him," James, author of The Calling -- How to Discover Your Calling in Three Days, told Us. "Nick and Mariah are really good for one another -- they have so much in common and can make the other one laugh. So they managed to cope even though Nick was pretty sick. But he is glad to be home now and his whole family is pleased about that also."

Although resting up in the hospital was difficult for the active 31-year-old, Nick's father said that "at the same time, he loved being the center of attention too when people visited him."

The great thing about my son is that he always tries to stay upbeat," James gushed. "He took his mind off things by joking with the nurses and doctors and things like that."

As for the couple's 8-month-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe? "They are absolutely beautiful babies," James told Us. "They are both doing great and they are a total mix of their parents. They both share Nick and Mariah's spirit and energy levels. They are beautiful and it is a joy and blessing to see them change and grow constantly."

Fortunately, Nick was released from an L.A. hospital Monday, and according to his dad is "doing well."

"The doctors have ordered him to rest and make some adjustments to his diet too," James added. "It has been an educational process for him, and he is determined to make those changes and stay away from soft drinks and too many sugar-based foods now."

Nick is expected to return to his morning radio show, Rollin' With Nick Cannon, on January 17.

This is us in the hospital - role reversal; Last year it was me attached to the machines (after having dembabies) and Nick was there with me through it, and now here we are.

We're trying to be as festive as possible under the circumstances but please keep Nick in your thoughts because this is very painful. They tried to kick me out of the hospital but here I am pon de bed with Mr. C.

We're doing OK but we're "straaaaaanded in Aspen". #DramaticDivaPlace (I know, we could be in a lot worse places) but the truth is as long as we're together, we're OK. I'm not trying to make light out of the situation because it's a serious moment that's very tough on all of us so please keep us and our family in your prayers. LYM.

Yep, it's cold out there: Mariah Carey swaps open-toe heels for winter boots during shopping trip in Aspen.
She's known for being a bit of a diva.

But an outfit change during a shopping trip is excessive even for her.

So it can only be that Mariah Carey misjudged the freezing weather conditions in Aspen, Colorado, yesterday when she stepped out in open-toe heels and bare legs.

The singer was spotted doing some last minute shopping in Prada ahead of her first Christmas with eight-month-old twins Monroe and Moroccan.

She had started the spree with a black winter jacket that flapped open to reveal a bare chest.

But later the 41-year-old had changed into more seasonable winter boots and a floppy hat.

The singer and husband Nick Cannon usually go to Aspen for Christmas but didn't last year due to fears the high altitude may interfere with her pregnancy.
She still went away because she has to be somewhere with snow at Christmas.

"It's got to be snowy," she said at the time.
"I was considering staying in LA because we love it, but it's not the most seasonal of places. I need snow."
Mariah is in great shape after shedding more than 70 lbs since the birth of her children.

The "All I Want For Christmas" singer showed off her curvy body in London earlier this month.

Mariah "Humbled" By Song's Longetivity

You can't go anywhere at the moment without a Christmas song blaring out.

But one being played more than any other is the Mariah Carey smash "All I Want For Christmas Is You."

Since it was first released in 1994, the classic track has spent more than 50 weeks in the UK Top 40 and sold millions of copies worldwide.

And that's before you factor in Mariah's new version with Justin Bieber along with Michael Buble's reworking of the hit on his No1 Christmas album.

Luckily she doesn't get sick of the song as she is a massive fan of Christmas- and not just because it signals another huge payday.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun, Mariah, 41, said: "I start planning my Christmas in June.

"It's absolutely my favourite holiday and I've always loved everything about this time of year. I love cooking and I'm a smash-hit wonder in the kitchen.

"I'm going to be making the turkey, cranberry sauce and all the trimmings this Christmas. I cooked at Thanksgiving and it was a real success with everyone asking for seconds."

Mariah's love of festive anthems, including Bing Crosby's White Christmas, led her to write "All I Want."

And even she is surprised by its lasting appeal.

She said: "I'm amazed and humbled by its popularity, even all these years later. And I think it's great that people have the song as a ringtone.

"Who'd have thought, all those years ago when I wrote it, that it would still be having an impact today?"

This year the song has been kept in our heads- and charts- by the star's duet with teen sensation Justin Bieber who has released a Christmas album of his own this year.

It was a no-brainer for Mariah to work with him as it introduced an army of young Beliebers to her famous Crimbo track.

She said: "Justin's definitely a young phenomenon- fun, cute and very talented. That's why I wanted to work with him."

But it's not just pop stars who have added to the song's popularity this year.

Earlier this month sailors on the HMS Ocean warship uploaded a video of themselves miming to the track to celebrate their return home after serving seven-and-a-half months in Libya. The ship initially set off on a seven-week training exercise before being diverted to support the UN air mission during the uprising against Colonel Gaddafi. The now-famous sailors returned home last week.

Their video went viral on YouTube scoring the heroes over 2.5 million views.

Even an impressed Mariah is a fan of the clip.

She tweeted: "This is the best thing I've ever seen, you guys just made my day!"

She told us: "I love their take on it. I think it's the cutest thing ever. Very good lip-synching too.

"If I'd had more time, I would have liked to have gone down to Plymouth to meet the singing sailors and their families.

"Sadly, my trip to London is so short, I just don't have time. But I'm very glad that they've all made it home for Christmas." Mum-of-two Mariah, who has sold more than 200million records in the last 20 years, will spend the festive period with friends and family in snowy Aspen, Colorado.

Mariah, who has been married to TV presenter Nick Cannon, 31, for three years, said: "Luckily Nick is almost as over-the-top festive as me. One year we hired Santa Claus to come round with real reindeer who looked as if they were going to fly off into the snow at any moment. Everyone loved it."

This year the couple will spend their first Christmas with their eight-month-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan.

Monroe is named after superstar Marilyn and her brother's name comes from the Moroccan Room in Mariah's apartment where Nick proposed to her.

The children feature in the video for her new single When Christmas Comes, which is a duet with John Legend. She said: "I actually wrote that song when I was pregnant. There's a line in it that says, 'We can laugh together as the children play'. So it was special having the twins with me for the recording of the video."

During her pregnancy Mariah regularly posted pictures of her huge baby bump online and kept her fans updated about "dem babies" as she refers to them.

She explained: "I had a tough pregnancy. Because I was carrying twins, I was super-heavy and I think my bones just weren't used to holding up that much weight.

"I don't think I understood the enormity or the magnitude of what being pregnant does to your body. By the end I could hardly walk.

"But I don't want to dwell on that really, or sound as if I'm complaining, because I know I'm very blessed. I'm loving motherhood. It's a beautiful place to be and they're very good kids." Mariah credits her own mother, Patricia, for getting her interested in singing when she was a toddler.

The pair sang a duet last year, "O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus," which was released last year on Mariah's second festive album, Merry Christmas II You.

And she hopes she can pass a love of singing on to her kids, too.

She said: "I started singing at home with my mom when I was four. I've always talked about her influence on me for my whole life. And with our duet, I felt as if we had come full circle.

"I certainly can imagine singing with the children round the tree when they're older because they really respond to music and love me to sing to them.

"And I do feel that musical ability is something that's handed down. We shall see."

Mariah has quickly shed her baby weight and credits the Jenny Craig Diet Plan- a company which ships special healthy ready meals to you- for helping her to slim down.

She said: "I had a lot of weight to lose because I'd retained so much water. Someone recommended the "Jenny" programme to me and it was exactly what I was looking for.

"It's quick but also very nutritious. I also did gentle aqua exercise as often as I could."

Mariah was so impressed with the "Jenny diet" she has become its US ambassador.

She said: "I wanted to help create awareness about healthy eating and losing weight. My pregnancy and weight gain made me realise what some women grapple with all their lives. At one point I thought I would never see my bone structure again."

Mariah was in London to pick up a Noble Gift Humanitarian Award for her charity work.

The singer said: "Several years ago I co-founded Camp Mariah, which is part of the Fresh Air Fund. This enables inner-city kids to look at their educational and career opportunities while enjoying camping adventures outside of the city.

"I'm planning on going camping with the kids again next summer."

Randy Jackson to Manage Mariah Carey?

andy Jackson is adding an A-lister to his dawg pound. The "American Idol" judge is negotiating a deal to manage Mariah Carey's career, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The duo know each other from their Columbia Records days when Jackson was vice president of A&R during the 1990s and Carey was signed to the label from 1988 to 2001.

Over the years, Jackson has produced, co-written and appeared on many Carey recordings. He's also played bass for the superstar both in the studio and on the road. Among his Carey credits: Jackson wrote and produced two songs for her 2001 film, "Glitter." On her 2002 Island Def Jam debut "Charmbracelet," Jackson is listed as composer, producer and percussionist while on her 2005 smash "Emancipation of Mimi," he returned to play bass and also appears in the video to Carey's cover of Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartbreak." Throughout her career, he has served as Carey's musical director and most recently, he produced her 2010 Christmas album, "Merry Christmas II You."

Carey, who gave birth to twins in April, was previously signed to Chris Lighty's Violator Entertainment, which represents such artists as 50 Cent, LL Cool J and Soulja Boy. In September, the company merged with Primary Wave, management home to Cee-Lo Green and Eric Benet.

More recently, he guided "Making the Band" winners Danity Kane and was reportedly working with Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross. Jay-Z, by virtue of running management company RocNation, has a hand in the careers of Rihanna and Willow Smith. Usher, in partnership with Justin Bieber manager Scooter Braun, can also lay claim to some of the pop phenom's success.

On Nov. 2, Jackson was in full management mode as he accompanied Carey to film the music video for "All I Want For Christmas Is You," her duet with Bieber, which appears on his "Under the Mistletoe" album (out now). The nine-hour night shoot took place at Macy's Herald Square in New York City and, according to observers, Jackson stayed for the duration. A few days later, he was seen at Carey's label offices where he was taking meetings. Says a source: "He's very much in the mix."

CAREY ON: With the help of an artist who was less than a year old when the song was originally released, Mariah Carey returns to the Billboard Hot 100 with an update of "All I Want for Christmas Is You."

Justin Bieber (born March 1, 1994) and Carey's duet of the song, parenthetically titled the "Superfestive!" version, arrives at No. 86 on the chart, as Bieber's seasonal set "Under the Mistletoe" becomes the first album by a male artist to launch at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

The original "Christmas" reached No. 12 on Radio Songs and No. 6 on Adult Contemporary in the 1994 holiday season. (Chart rules at the time prevented the non-commercially-available single from appearing on the Hot 100 that year).

Last week in New York, Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber shot the forthcoming video for their new version of "All I Want for Christmas Is You," which Carey first made a solo smash in 1994.

With the bow, Carey notches her 44th Hot 100 hit. Her prior visit was likewise Yuletide-themed: "Oh Santa!" spent a week at No. 100 last holiday season. Six months after welcoming twins Moroccan and Monroe, Mariah Carey has lost 30 pounds -- and shows off her toned legs and flat stomach in size-6 short-shorts on the stunning new cover of Us Weekly, out now.

"I gained an enormous amount of weight," the Grammy-winner superstar tells Us of welcoming her son and daughter April 30 with hubby Nick Cannon.
How'd she slim down? Beginning in July, Carey buckled down with a nutritionist and a workout plan from Jenny (formerly Jenny Craig), keeping to a 1,500-calorie-a-day menu and thrice-weekly workouts.
"I feel incredible," the "Fly Like a Bird" singer tells Us, three months after her body transformation began. She and Cannon, 31, famously struggled to conceive their twins (born via C-section at 35 weeks) after a heartbreaking miscarriage.

"It was a huge blessing to be able to have the babies," Carey says, "But I felt trapped in my body because I couldn't move."

Adds the once-again svelte star: "I'm proud of how hard I worked to get my body back...I had to do this for me."

Mariah Carey sings praises of Jenny Craig after weight loss

Singer Mariah Carey made it happen and hopes to inspire others to do the same.

Carey, 42, lost the weight she gained during her pregnancy. She and her husband, Nick Cannon, have twins, Monroe and Moroccan Scott Cannon, born April 30. She has dropped 30 pounds on the Jenny Craig weight-loss program since July 22 and is the company's new celebrity spokeswoman.

"I feel better in every way," says Carey, who has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide and had 18 No. 1 singles. "To me, it's mind, body and soul. I was in a bad place physically during my pregnancy."

When she was expecting, Carey had gestational diabetes and severe edema — swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in the body's tissues.

"Edema was the probably the most painful thing I went through during my pregnancy. My legs looked three times the size of what my legs do right now. I thought I would never be the same person again."

After the twins were born, "I lost a lot of water weight initially, and then I lost 30 pounds on top of that."

Over the years, she has shared her emotional struggles, and now she's sharing her weight-loss struggles for people "going through the pain and shame — everything that comes with weight gain."

Some of her future commercials for Jenny, the company's new shortened name, will feature her song Make It Happen. "I wrote that song from personal experience."

The song is "so fitting because a lot of people give up hope when they have had their kids and can't lose that 20 pounds or 40 pounds, or they have gone through issues with weight their entire lives. It becomes so frustrating and debilitating that you give up."

Carey says she had a few indulgences during her pregnancy, including sugary drinks, soul food and pizza. But she doesn't know how much weight she gained because she didn't weigh herself. "I was walking around the house, pregnant and miserable, looking at mirrors and saying: "Why did I put so many mirrors in my house?' "

After the babies were born by cesarean section, she breast-fed them for a while and followed a regular diet.

Several weight-loss companies called her about working with them, Carey says, but when she spoke to the executives at Jenny, "all of whom had their own issues with weight," she felt "a kinship with everybody I spoke with."

The company is known for its high-profile success stories, including actresses Carrie Fisher and Valerie Bertinelli, lifestyle counseling services and packaged food eaten in combination with high-fiber fruits and vegetables.

Carey also will be working with Jenny in a new venture to support and promote the American Heart Association's new initiative, My Heart. My Life.

Dana Fiser, CEO of Jenny, says, "We are thrilled to have her commitment for such a big cause for several years."

Fiser says the company hopes that the combination of Carey and its new name to broaden its appeal to younger women.

In July, when Carey was no longer breast-feeding the twins, she started on the Jenny program, ate the company's foods and was particularly fond of their soups. She says she mixed it up and did some of her own cooking, too, which is part of the program. She does mostly aquatic workouts for 45 minutes four or five days a week.

Speaking of her current weight, Carey says she doesn't go by the scale but by "my dress size. Right now I am between a 4 or 6." She's 5-foot-9.

About her weight loss, she adds, "I worked like a fiend."

Mariah Carey wasn't shy about showing off her baby bump when she was pregnant with now-6-month-old twins Moroccan and Monroe Cannon.

And now, she's positively ecstatic about unveiling her hot new post-baby body after losing, she says, a full 70 lbs.

On Tuesday's episode of The Rosie Show on OWN, Carey, 42, was lowered diva-style onto the stage riding on a crescent moon and wearing a skin-tight black mini-skirt and cleavage-baring leather jacket.

She then explained her new physique was courtesy of a strict diet and exercise – along with the loss of what she says is about 40 lbs. of water due to a difficult pregnancy.

"In the beginning, when I first had the babies, I had so much edema … water and swelling. Most pregnant woman have that just in their feet," Carey says. "One day I was doing my thank-you notes and I noticed it started rising up the leg, so I had edema. … I didn't think I would ever be the same person."

Diet Plan Spokeswoman
Once she'd shed the water weight, Carey embarked on the Jenny diet plan (formerly Jenny Craig), for which she now serves as a spokeswoman.

"The first week, I lost 40 lbs. … of just water," Carey says. "It was just water, initially. When I started with the program, I lost at least 30 lbs. of weight that needed to be lost."

And, says Carey, it wasn't all about appearance. Carrying so much extra weight made everyday tasks, including going to the bathroom, a challenge.

"I had a really tough pregnancy," she says. "I was supposed to be on bed rest, but it was so bad that even bed hurt. … I learned a lot being pregnant, watching my body change."

She adds, "The whole point of this is not just like: 'Oh, hey, look at me and my weight loss, I'm fantastic.' It's really health. Like I said, I learned it when I became helpless and felt so vulnerable like never before in my life."

How She Did It
Because she had a Cesarean section, Carey says exercise wasn't an option early on. So, she says, "The diet is 90 percent of it."

Remembering to eat was one of her biggest challenges because, she says, she believes if she goes too long without refueling, "You slow down your metabolism."

For her, it was important "being able to just grab something. I like the soups a lot. It's 50 calories. I gotta say I like the snacks too."

Carey also regained her fitness by exercising with her dogs and doing workouts in the ocean.

One thing she won't stick with once she meets her goal.

"I never weighed myself," she explains. "People will think I'm a liar but it's true. This is another cliché phrase, I'm a big boned girl … I'm tall and so I always weigh more."

Instead of weighing herself, she says, "I would tend to go, 'Does this size dress fit me that I wore three years ago? I'm good, let's go.' I would go by what it looked like, how I felt."

Justin Bieber has been very busy this week. He dropped a new album, Under the Mistletoe on Tuesday, appeared on "Dancing With the Stars," freestyled over the Throne's "Otis," and not only shot a music video with Boyz II Men for "Fa La La," but also managed to squeeze in a shoot with Mariah Carey.

Bieber and Carey both tweeted about the video for their reimagining of her classic holiday tune "All I Want for Christmas Is You."

"Might have to go shoot this video with @mariahcarey for our duet! focused on the positives ... the music. #UNDERTHEMISTLETOE," Bieber tweeted about the shoot, referring to a California woman's claim that he fathered her child.

"4:30am and going hard on the 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' shoot with @mariahcarey !! #superfestive #underthemistletoe," he later shared. The original video for the tune, shot to look like a home video, features Carey decked out in skimpy Santa suits and snow-bunny garb, running around decorating Christmas trees, playing in the snow, hanging with Santa and his elves, and generally getting into the holiday spirit.

Mariah Carey seemed equally stoked about the video shoot, gushing about it on her Twitter: "Shooting the final take of 'All I Want.' duet with surprise appearance by Jilly beans & directed by my friend, the wonderful Sanaa Hamri," she said, noting that the shoot was made even more special because it coincided with one of her personal milestones.

"Happy anniversary to [my album] MERRY CHRISTMAS II YOU!!!" she added.

"On the night we're shooting the new 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' with @justinbieber."

Hamri has shot videos for Carey's "Crybaby," "Bringing on the Heartbreak" and "Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica)," as well as clips for Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z and Christina Aguilera.

The shoot lasted all night, with Bieber tweeting Thursday morning (November 3) that Carey and the crew had wrapped up. "Just wrapped the ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU with the icon and amazing @mariahcarey !" he wrote. "HONORED and I think this video is gonna b classic!"

Bieber told MTV News that getting Carey to join him for the duet was surprisingly easy. "Mariah Carey is doing it with me! It's incredible. So excited," he said. "We wanted Mariah from the beginning, but we kind of thought it was really hard, so we didn't really push the idea. But she's on my label, so we reached out to some people, she got in contact with us, and Randy Jackson was actually at the studio with us, and I was like, 'Yo, you think you can help get Mariah on the Christmas album?' Christmas comes early for Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber fans. The pop diva will be spreading more cheer this holiday season with a newly completed collaboration with the teen idol. The labelmates have recorded a duet of Mariah’s Christmas classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

Mariah broke the news in a video posted online. “Justin and I are doing this duet together. It is my song ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You,’ which I wrote and produced,” she told fans. “I think a lot of you are already very surprised by this and you’re going to be even more surprised when you hear it. The song sounds great. I’m very excited for everybody to hear it this Christmas and to be totally festive with our festive collabo.”

The song will appear on Justin’s Christmas album Under the Mistletoe, which also features collaborations with Busta Rhymes, Usher, and Boyz II Men. It arrives in stores November 1.

Just five months after giving birth to twins, new mom Mariah Carey is back at work.

The diva’s longtime producer Jermaine Dupri posted photos of Carey in the studio on his official website.
Mariah posted the pictures as well, and tweeted about her new endeavor: “So happy to be back in the studio with the one & only @Mr_Dupri aka Jermash!"

In an interview with Billboard, Nick Cannon confirmed that his wife is working on a new album.

"She's been working away, and we have a studio in the crib, and [the pregnancy] has totally inspired her on so many different levels,” he said. “You're definitely gonna see some new phenomenal music from Mariah."

Carey, 41, and Cannon, 30, welcomed twins Monroe and Moroccan Scott on April 30 of this year.
Nick assures fans that Mariah’s latest effort will be available toward the end of the year.
Carey released her 12th studio album, “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,” in 2009, and her second holiday album, “Merry Christmas II You,” last year.

Joan Collins thinks Rihanna, Beyoncé Knowles and Mariah Carey look "perfect".

The 78-year-old is famous for her signature look of bright red lipstick and large shoulder pads. Joan has kept this style ever since she played the role of Alexis on 80s TV show Dynasty.

The actress and novelist has complimented some of the women she thinks dress well in show business today.

"Rihanna is always exquisitely dressed," Joan told the British edition of OK! magazine, "and so are Beyoncé and Mariah Carey - I think those girls look perfect."

However, Joan also hinted that some of music's more extravagant icons aren't always to her taste. Lady Gaga's famous meat dress and colourful wigs were are "not quite [Joan's] scene."

The glamorous star also revealed she doesn't spend much time getting ready. Joan has perfected her beauty routine over the years and it now takes her under half an hour to do her hair and make-up.

"I have a hairstyle that's just wash and go really," she confessed "I put make-up on very fast, that's why we call it slap in the business! It's usually just moisturiser, base, powder, lipstick and sunglasses."

VMA winner Justin Bieber is a young guy, so he might not be aware that by producing an entirely original Christmas album he is stepping into an arena dominated almost exclusively by one of pop's biggest divas, Santa's Helper outfit enthusiast Mariah Carey.
For all intents and purposes, Mariah Carey is the unofficial Queen of Christmas. She wears Santa hats in public (and has miniature ones on her dogs), puts together holiday music spectaculars and usually celebrates the holiday with a lavish vacation in Aspen. A Google search of "Mariah Carey Christmas" returns over 45 million results and the video for her 1994 single "All I Want For Christmas Is You" has over 28 million views on YouTube.

The pop star has released two Christmas albums, 1994's Merry Christmas and last year's Merry Christmas II You, and while neither is wholly original (the second is principally standards with only a few original tunes), Carey owns this niche. Merry Christmas is the biggest selling Christmas album of all time, with worldwide sales exceeding 15 million copies.

And if Biebs is taking the original song route, he should be aware that Carey has set a pretty high bar. In the 17 years since its release, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" has become a standard itself – the New Yorker called it "one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon." The track resurfaces on worldwide singles charts every holiday season, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 Re-currents Chart every year from 2005-08. The numbers for it are actually kind of staggering – "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is the best selling holiday digital single ever (and the nineteenth best-selling digital single of the 20th Century!), the most downloaded holiday ringtone of all time and is Carey's biggest single ever in the UK.

It's probably worth noting here that we cannot speak impartially about Carey or "All I Want." Like so many others who grew up during the peak of her popularity, the song has become the Christmas track of our generation. Little Drummer who? Jingle what? It is inescapable and amazing. During college we used to ride around with friends singing "All I Want For Christmas Is You" in the middle of July. This song is so good, it's Christmas every damn day, if you ask us.

And now the kids will have fresh Bieber songs to spike their holiday season. We'll stick with our girl Mariah, but that's great for them. Bieber is a talented kid, so there's no doubt he'll deliver the goods. And if he plays his cards right, as Carey did, he'll be living off royalties for years to come. How else do you think she affords all that glitter?!

X Factor: Mariah Will Appear – But Not as a Judge

It's official – Mariah Carey will appear on this fall's buzzy new talent competition, The X Factor, a source close to the show tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Carey won't be a judge, but rather a guest of a judge – in this case Simon Cowell, who hinted recently the diva was interested in joining the show.

"Mariah is definitely confirmed to be a part of X Factor," the source says. "She is confirmed to tape something with Simon Cowell at the judge's homes."

And Carey won't be the only celeb guest, the source adds.

"Each of the judges will tape something with mentors they have selected and Simon has selected Mariah to do that with him. The judge's mentor the talent they pick and she will be working with them," says the source.

Is Mariah Carey Joining X Factor?

What you might not know about The X Factor is that unlike American Idol, this upcoming Fox series shows "everything" behind the scenes. At least that's the word from überproducer/resident cranky pants Simon Cowell, who tackled Q's from reporters today at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, along with Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and the rest of the show's cast and crew.

We got our first glimpse of some of that candor as Simon addressed rumors Mariah Carey might be a part of X Factor, what really happened with ousted judge Cheryl Cole and more. So is Mariah coming on?

Sure sounds like it. According to Simon, he wanted Mariah to be a judge, but now she'll appear in a different way. "There's certain sections on the show where we do have well known people helping us on the show," Simon explains. "I talked to her the other day, and she's been enthusiastic since day one. But then she selfishly got pregnant which is why she didn't end up as a judge."

The X Factor begins Sept. 21 with auditions.

Mariah Carey returned to television for the first time since giving birth to her twins. The new mom spoke about her babies and got a visit from husband Nick Cannon while launching her new lifestyle collection on HSN.
During the live chat, Mimi showed off the floral fashions inspired by her visits to Capri and joked about the name for her fragrance Lollipop Bling. “No, I didn’t select that name,” she said. “Sorry, it was something I couldn’t undo. It wasn’t my favorite name but people love it.”

Singer Mariah Carey has revealed that she is still on track to release new material this year and that her new album is set to be much more like her older tracks. However, Mariah also claimed that it is not yet ready to be released quite yet, as it is still in demo form.

Carey took to her Twitter account to reassure her fans that ‘Save The Day’ is very much on track. She posted, “Yes, Save The Day is still on track to be released, but it’s still in demo form & not ready for the world! LYM” but some of her fans are a bit too eager for the release.

She's remained out of view ever since welcoming baby twins back on April 30th, but Mariah Carey was finally spotted stepping out in Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon (July 6).

The 41-year-old singer tried her best to avoid paparazzi lenses to no avail as she was joined by a pair of personal trainers while awaiting transportation in the Big Apple locale.

Certainly doing all in her power to return to pre-pregnancy form, Mimi is rumored to be preparing for a role on the U.S. version of "X Factor" - which could last all season long.

An insider recently told Entertainment Weekly, “Mariah and Simon are great friends, and now [that] she has had her babies, it’s very possible that she will be involved [in] some way in the later stages of the show. She has always said she wanted to work with the show, so it’s something they will certainly be discussing ideas for soon."

Adding fuel to the fire, creator Simon Cowell dished, “I think Mariah will have a role on the TV live shows. I met her recently and she was on great form. And her idea was to be the judge of the judges, which only Mariah could come up with.”

The superstar new mom is in talks to create a whole album of baby-themed Mariah classics!

Mariah Carey‘s husband Nick Cannon revealed the news exclusively to HollyBaby.com, explaining how Mariah came up with the idea for an album of lullabies after singing her twins Moroccan and Monroe to sleep.

“She sings to them, she turns a lot of her songs into lullabies,” Nick tells HollyBaby.com. “They are actually recorded, there will probably be something coming out soon!”

We can’t wait to hear it!

Comedian Nick, 30, also told us all about what goes on inside ‘Roc and ‘Roe’s luxury nursery — and we were shocked to find out notorious diva Mariah, 41, is 100 percent a hands on mom. She even she wakes to feed and change her baby twins in the night!

“We’re getting no sleep at all,” Nick says. “But it’s cool though. when they wake up we just feed them and change them.”

Because there’s twins… they BOTH have to get up!

“We take turns, but it depends when they wake up. There is two of them so they normally wake up at the same time, so ones on one, the other on the other!”

Just because he’s always smiling, doesn’t mean Nick’s a softy — he’s already decided HE’LL be the bad cop when it comes to laying down the law with ‘Roc & ‘Roe.

“Dad is definitely the disciplinary, I’m the stern one, the daddy with the deep voice.”

But right now he’s still a big mush, smitten with the eight-week-olds. His favorite past time? “Right now, it’s like holding them, seeing them smile.”

Nick kicked off his July 4th as Pepto-Bismol‘s Grillmaster at the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island, NY. The rest of his day, he celebrated ‘Roc and ‘Roe’s first Independence Day at the couple’s Hamptons home.

He shares, “I’ll be grilling, it’s a BBQ day with the family. We’ll probably chill in the Hamptons for the rest of the day.”

And those long awaited photos of ‘Roc & ‘Roe? We’re going to have to wait a while longer. Nick is NOT keen on selling snaps of the twins to a magazine. He says, “We’re definitely going to take our time with that. I personally don’t think we need to at all, but the public are interested. I want my kids to be able to be normal regular kids.”

SIMON Cowell has axed another of his favourite girls from the show... Sinitta.

Simon Cowell, who’s now working on the American version of the hit programme, has decided to drop his ex-girlfriend as his helper this year.

Instead he is set to hire pop diva Mariah Carey, 41, to assist him in choosing his acts for the finals of The X Factor USA.

His decision has come like a bolt out of the blue for poor Sinitta.

She’s had that role on the UK show for the last seven years and was hoping he would enlist her services for the US series.

But Sinitta, 42, is determined to fight the move.

She said: “Well, let’s just say feathers will fly if Mariah takes my spot.

“Although she is a mega diva vocally, you can expect another XF USA drama. I won’t just roll over and take it. I hope she can run in high heels.”

Cowell will be jetting to a stately mansion in the UK for the “judges’ homes” stage of the competition on The X Factor USA this summer.

Music Box was released on August 31, 1993 by Columbia Records. After selling over 15 million copies of her self-titled debut album, Mariah Carey decided to experiment with her sound for her follow up album, Emotions, but failed to make the same type of commercial impact as her debut. Carey returned to the studio determined to broaden her listening audience and produce another high quality album not only for herself, but for legions of her beloved fans. As a result, her career ascended to extraordinary heights.

This album would see Carey asserting her control over all aspects of her musical sound. It was mutually agreed upon to take her sound in a more pop-friendly direction over the heavy R&B/Soul influence from her previous album. Alongside her writing partner Walter Afanasieff, Carey was able to carve out a niche where many of her contemporaries failed to. Music Box introduced a young producer named David Hall, welcomed back the long time production duo of David Cole and Robert Cliviles and ushered in the arrival of Babyface and Daryl Simmons on a Mariah Carey led album. Carey’s five octave range was on full display once again, which left an indelible mark on the majority of songs on the album.

Mariah Carey came from a musical family where her mother was a singer for the New York City Opera as well as being a vocal coach. At the tender age of 3, she began singing and by the time she reached high school Carey was cutting records as a demo singer for a local recording studio in her native Long Island. It was during this juncture where she received tutelage from the legendary Gavin Christopher and began writing with Ben Marguiles. From her association with Marguiles, Carey was able to write and record songs for her demo tape, which ended up on her debut album, Mariah Carey.

As the story goes, Carey would go on to become a backup vocalist for then popular recording artist, Brenda K. Starr. At a industry party in 1988, Carey’s demo tape ended up in the hands of Columbia Records executive, Tommy Mottola. She eventually received her big break in the fall of the same year. Her debut album Mariah Carey only foreshadowed what was to come and three years later she found herself in a league of her own.

Between the months of August 1992-May 1993, Music Box was recorded at Right Track Studios in Manhattan, New York and The Plant Studios in Sausalito, California.

SoulCulture recently sat down with Walter Afanasieff, the co-writer, producer and studio musician for the album to share their blueprint for creating a classic record.

Afanasieff remembers how he first became involved with Carey on her previous albums.

“I actually did work on her first album,” says Afanasieff. “I was sort of the arranger and co-producer to a gentleman named Narada Michael Walden. I was his right hand guy, his keyboardist, co-writer, arranger, co-producer sort of guy. He was hired to do a few songs on the first album. We actually worked on the “Vision of Love” song from the first album as well as “Someday” and “I Don’t Wanna Cry.”

I was involved at that time as a musician. When Tommy Mottola and Mariah were in California working on her album with Narada Michael Walden, we all met. In the meeting with Tommy and Mariah, we exchanged the knowledge that this was a cool opportunity for us to be acquainted and to continue working together.

“Tommy gave me a challenge and he said, ‘We have one more song that we want to record for the first album and the album is already pressed and in the CD cases, but I’m going to halt the presses. And if this song that you do, Walter turns out good we’ll put that song on the first album again on the second pressing.’ So he gave me this challenge and I delivered the last song for that first album called “Love Takes Time.” “Love Takes Time” ended up being Mariah’s second single, which went to number 1 after “Vision of Love” went to number one. It was my first production and that’s how we started our relationship.

“I started to score points with her and them because they thought I was good enough to become her writing partner. So her and I started to write for her second album. The meeting of the first, led to writing on the second and that led to Music Box being a really serious music collaboration. The first album where we worked very hard and closely together was the Emotions album and there we ironed out some of the creases and it wasn’t perfect. We weren’t exactly on point yet, but with Music Box we were definitely on point.”

Afanasieff describes the direction they wanted to pursue for the album.

“It was never a purposeful idea, it was always about what Mariah was writing and feeling,” says Afanasieff. “Mariah is a simple songwriter. She writes about what she’s going through. She writes about her feelings and she writes about the climate the world is in musically. So at the time Music Box was written for and being put together, it was all about what we were doing. It had nothing to do with a direction decision. She simply went through her first album and on her second album, Emotions we tried a lot of different things that we were writing and feeling and we started writing different songs after that and we got into a different spirit, which led to the Music Box record.

“We didn’t have any orders coming down from the music executives to tell us to make the record more pop, more soulful or softer, nothing like that. It was strictly about what she was feeling and how she felt is how we wrote the songs and those ended up being on the album. I would write something at the piano with her and the challenge at that point becomes how do we produce a modern, hit sounding track based on what we just finished writing at the piano. So that production and arrangement is what makes the song sound the way it sounds. She would take the tracks that I did for her and she would vibe on those. And then she would layer her vocals a certain way and it was just a building process from there that you take step by step. It was never a decision that it was going to be a certain way before it happened.

He continues, “Mariah is her own melodious. She is the one that comes up with the vocal. Whenever she ends up singing what you hear her singing it comes from her. The writing partnership that her and I had and I can’t speak for her other songwriting partners, but if you could see us in the room I would hit a chord and play a little melody on the piano and she would say, ‘Oh, that’s nice,’ and she would sing that melody and then she adds a little bit to it. I would then play it back and then she would say, ‘Yea, that’s good’ so it instantly becomes this partnership where eventually she’ll have a melody and then the melody would prompt her to start thinking about this feeling she wants to put into words. This would eventually become the theme of the song. Melody wise it was also a partnership that developed her melodies and it was really her that took the direction lyrically. She would write the majority of the lyrics herself.”

Afanasieff recalls how he became involved with the lead single “Dreamlover” from the album.

“’Dreamlover,’ for instance, was a song that Mariah was doing on the side,” says Afanasieff. “She had a particular need for up-tempo records and more of a cutting edge sound. I won’t say I was only the balladeer, but the more softer, melodic, more ballad and songs like that I was at the helm with her for those records. She would always have this little area of her album where David Cole and Robert Clivilles would be featured. Unfortunately, it was just a one shot type of deal from my understanding of it. A gentleman named Dave Hall produced the song. He was this up and coming producer, writer, track guy in the New York area.

“She went off and wrote ‘Dreamlover’ with Dave. I had nothing to do with the writing or even the initial production of the first draft, but when the song was delivered to the record company Tommy Mottola and Columbia Records decided the record needed a little bit more something to it. In their opinion, it was a little too dark and a little unexciting I guess to put on the radio in its form. So they gave it to me and I added a few little bits and pieces to it. I added a Hammond B3 organ to it to make it bounce a little bit better and I added some drums to replace some of the drum parts. I remixed it and added some sprinkles and sparks on it. It was very nice to be involved on that song and I got to be listed as a co-producer on it.”

“Dreamlover” landed at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts, #2 on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart and #9 on the UK Singles Chart and it helped to engineer success for Music Box after its release.

Carey’s second single from the album was the iconic “Hero” and Afanasieff tells a fascinating story of how the song came together with assistance from Tommy Mottola.

“One of my favorite stories of the Mariah Carey era was when I was asked to write a song for a film that was being finished in Hollywood that Sony/Columbia Pictures was putting out,” says Afanasieff. “Being intertwined with Sony Music you’re sort of connected to the company next door which is Sony Pictures. So a lot of times Sony Pictures calls upon Sony Music to produce the music for the movie, which is a pretty standard procedure. They asked me if I would come in and screen a movie called “Hero” which was a Dustin Hoffman and Andy Garcia movie.

“At this particular time, they asked Gloria Estefan to sing this song and they asked me to write and produce a song for the movie. I was carrying this bit of information in my head when I came to New York City to work with Mariah on her album. We were getting together to do some writing for her album. One day, while we were at Right Track Studios I told her about this project I was working on and asked her if she wanted to write this song with me. I told her it was pretty cool and the concept of the movie. I started playing the piano part at the beginning of the song and she asked me, ‘Is that your idea for it?’ I told her, ‘Yea, this is what I’ve been working on for it.’ She goes, ‘Yea, that’s really pretty. Let’s try it.’ So we sat there and tried it.

“Within the next two hours we had the bulk of the song done. She started to not be Mariah Carey, the singer, she started to become the songwriter for someone else. She wasn’t really worried about it being for her and her style. She just came out of the box and we wrote “Hero.” At that time, Tommy Mottola walked in and asked us what we were doing. We told him we just wrote this song for the movie “Hero.” He said ‘Let me hear it.’ and after he heard it he looked at us and he said, ‘There’s absolutely no way you’re giving that song to that movie. This is your song, Mariah.’

“She said, ‘What? I’m not going to sing this song. This song is not for me. This isn’t what I want. This isn’t my style.’ He told her, ‘No, trust me. If you put this song on your album and put this out, it’s genius. This will be one of your biggest songs I promise you.’ She said, ‘I don’t want to. This isn’t who I want to be. I want to be less smaltzy. I want to be less pop and less ballad driven.’ He said, ‘Trust me. You have to record this song.’ So she ended up recording it herself. We didn’t give it to the movie and I didn’t write anything for the movie. Low and behold it was one of the biggest hits of her career.”

“Hero” peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts, #5 on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart and #7 on the UK Singles Chart and it generated more success for Carey.

The next single to follow “Hero” was “Without You,” which was a remake of the popular 1970 hit written by the British rock group, Badfinger. Afanasieff spoke on how strong the response was for it in Europe.

“The song that she loved and wanted to do a remake of was “Without You” by the British rock group Badfinger and remade by Harry Nilsson,” says Afanasieff. “Mariah was always influenced by the Beatles, George Michael, Stevie Wonder and many other artists. “Without You” was a personal favorite of hers.

“I wanted to get closer to the version that I believed the integrity of the song belonged to which was the Harry Nilsson version because it had the power, the piano and the big sound. I went to work on our version of the track and Mariah came in and slayed her vocal and it turned out pretty powerful. At that time, I think there was a climate in the world especially from Europe because you have to understand there were other girls out there in the mid-’90s like Celine Dion who were really raising the bar. Europe loved the song “Without You” and then it caught on here in the US.”

“Without You” peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts, #7 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart and #1 on the UK Singles Chart.

The fourth single to be revealed to the public at large would be the Babyface and Daryl Simmons produced song entitled, “Never Forget You.” “Never Forget You” peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts and #7 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart.

“Never Forget You”:

The final single to be released from the album would be “Anytime You Need A Friend.” It showcased a pair of newcomers Kelly Price and Melonie Daniels on background vocals. It peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts, #22 on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart and #8 on the UK Singles Chart.

Afanasieff gives a glimpse into how the song was formulated.

“Mariah was a huminguous lover of gospel music and the church,” says Afanasieff. “We were always in the company of these wonderful singers reared in the church. Her background singers like Melonie Daniels and Kelly Price grew up in the church. We were messing around with the fact that we were going to do a gospel type song. We had done a couple of songs on her second album. One was called “And You Don’t Remember” that we wrote and it had that 6,8 churchy, gospel type sound. We wanted to do something like that again.

“Mariah also loved a song that she had on her first album called “I Don’t Wanna Cry.” The substance of “I Don’t Wanna Cry” and the gospel quality of “And You Don’t Remember” led this sort of melodic, melancholy theme that we wanted to bust out into some big harmony gospel singing type of chorus. This is how we came up with “Anytime You Need a Friend.”

“It was very much driven by me being at the piano. When I’m playing the piano I’m playing a million different things. When I would be playing the piano Mariah would say ‘What’s that?’ and I’ll say ‘Which one?’ and she would say ‘Yea, I like it.’ and then when I would go on and play a hundred more things and she would do the same thing. I would play the minor sad melody, the chord progression and the verse she would say ‘What’s that? I love that.’ Then she would figure out the theme of the song. It was a combination of what we did on “I Don’t Wanna Cry” and “And You Don’t Remember” alongside the beautiful singing her girls were going to provide. Mariah gave the world that sick female harmony almost choir sounding style of hers. She loved arranging and adding as many harmonies as possible.”

Afanasieff goes on to provide insight on how the final tracks of the album came together and his disappointment in a decision made by the record company regarding the final printed version of the album.

“Mariah was very influenced by George Michael and his album Faith,” says Afanasieff. “She asked me if I had a sound that she really loved, which was a special organ sound. I remember being at Right Track Studios and we scoured the city to find the keyboard that was used to create the sound on that one George Michael song that she really loved. So we came back to the studio with a bunch of keyboards and I tried to come up with the sound and it didn’t work out. I finally got a Roland Juno 106 synthesizer delivered and in that bank of organ keyboard sounds she said, ‘Yeah, that’s the sound I really love.’

“So we started playing around with me hitting these chords on this organ sound and I started to play a chord progression and she immediately started to go into this beautiful musical trance. She started singing lovely melodies of my chord changes on the keyboard. This the melody that is now the song called ‘Music Box.’ It was so beautiful that we added this little music box sound to it. It was all based on this keyboard that George Michael started using years before that influenced Mariah when she was a younger girl.”

“Music Box”:

“’Just to Hold You Once Again’ was a lyric that she wrote after the music was written and the feeling of the music inspired Mariah to put these words down. I had a very classical upbringing and an intense life of classical training, piano lessons and music school. So I’m a really accomplished musician and I’m extremely versatile when it comes to different music genres. As I said earlier, I would play a chord progression and Mariah would like it and we would go off on that vibe.

“And with ‘Just To Hold You Once Again’ we had these really cool chord progressions that made her go into a place of really missing someone, being sad and wanting to be with that person. She wrote this really beautiful lyric about how she would wish to hold that person one more time. A lot of people were quick to assume that she was lonely and sad. Just because someone wrote a sad song doesn’t mean that’s what they are. It was just a feeling that the song brought out. A good songwriter can get into the actual mood of the song. Mariah has such a gift for composing and song writing.”

“Just To Hold You Once Again”:

“We kind of did a song on every album that had a similarity to each other and it was a little wave that her and I caught on the first real big project we worked on together, which was the album Emotions. There was this chord progression we always liked to remind ourselves of. It was one of those times where we ended up writing a song that really was just a very comfortable place that we would always go into. It was something that naturally came out. There were a couple of songs that we ended up with. My favorite song from the Music Box album wasn’t on the US version, but it was on the international version of the album it was “Everything Fades Away.” It kind of broke my heart to be honest.

“Everything Fades Away”:

“Record companies always have their rules. They always feel like there’s too many songs on an album or not enough songs on an album or not enough of this kind of song on an album. It’s usually a decision made by a corporate mind and they’re usually wrong. “Everything Fades Away” one was of the favorites that many Europeans always say and I had wished it went on the American release. Because it didn’t make the American release we put the other song ‘All I’ve Ever Wanted’ on the album. It’s in that area of where it was a ballad type of song and it was really comfortable for us.”

The remaining two songs on Music Box were two infectious up-tempo songs produced by David Cole and Robert Cliviles, “Now That I Know” and “I’ve Been Thinking About You.”

Music Box peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart in the early winter of 1993 and it found its way back to the top of the charts three different times in three different countries (U.S., UK and Australia) and has went on to sell more than 32 million albums worldwide. The album has achieved multi-platinum status in 11 countries and landed at #26 on the Billboard End of Decade Album Chart in 1999 proving its staying power and effect on popular culture.

To this day, it’s regarded as the one of the greatest albums from the 1990s and remains the highest selling album of her career. This album earned a plethora of Grammy, American Music Award and Soul Train Music Award nominations. Music Box set the standard for other Pop infused R&B records for the remainder of the decade. It will continue to be a bellwether of what quality music should sound like for the coming generations of music fans.

Afanasieff speaks on his fond memories of working with Carey and creating Music Box.

“I was lucky enough to be involved 18 years ago with Mariah Carey to form a union to inspire, write and produce music that ended up on album called Music Box,” says Afanasieff. “It is now being hailed as a classic album because it sold so many records worldwide. It garnered so many beautiful songs and hits. It saved people’s lives and still does. When people hear “Hero” and someone is deeply troubled they’ll play the song and will be reminded that the hero is inside of them not anyone else. That message will stand the test of time.

“The album was a real masterpiece. It was a cumulative work of art that was due to an atmosphere where we enjoyed and challenged ourselves. Record companies today won’t even sign people let alone put out songs because some survey says it won’t sell or some 13 year old won’t download it on ITunes. I think we’re better than that and we deserve better than that.”

Mariah Carey is shopping shots of her newborn twins, Moroccan Scott and Monroe, but the pop star will have trouble getting the millions she initially wanted for them, sources say.

Multiple mags including People and OK! are jockeying for the photos of the 7-week-old twin boy and girl, which will likely fetch a more modest $200,000.

But sources close to Carey and husband, "America's Got Talent" host Nick Cannon, say the couple is more concerned with how tastefully the shots are presented than any giant price tag.

"Mariah and Nick are more concerned with doing the right thing than going to the highest bidder," said a source close to the couple. "They're talking to a number of publications about doing it in the best and most tasteful way. Nick has said on radio he doesn't feel entirely comfortable selling pictures of his children. But the first picture remains very valuable to the paparazzi."

Carey has already landed a few covers with her long wished-for pregnancy. She did a "My Baby Miracle" interview with Us Weekly in November. She then posed naked while pregnant on the cover of Life & Style in April, prompting Cannon to joke on his radio show, "My children are going to have to see these pictures... It's a little weird."

The twins were born in an LA hospital on April 30 but have not yet been seen in public. "She is still deciding when and if she's going to [do the pictures]," said a rep for Carey. "She is enjoying being a mom, and there's no rush. It's not about the money."

Sources say Carey had hoped at first to get much more for the photos, possibly rivaling the most expensive of all time. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got a reported $14 million for Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline in 2008, although it went to charity.

But, "There's not much movement going on right now," said a source. "Everyone wants them, and everyone is putting in offers. But times and budgets have changed from the Brangie baby years."

Sony Music: Doug Morris Arrives July 5th, L.A. Reid Follows & Possibly Mariah Too

Doug Morris won’t officially take over at Sony Music until July 5th even though his contract says July 1st. This has to do with prior commitments for the July 4th vacation. Then, just as I told you on March 16th, L.A. Reid follows and joins Morris to run Epic Records. Right now Reid off with the “X Factor” crew judging contestants.

Meanwhile, elsewhere at Sony, Peter Edge is expected to run the RCA end of things, while Tom Corson still presides at the company. Basically, Universal and Sony have swapped staffs, with RCA-J-Arista’s Larry Jackson having already moved to Interscope. What fun! Artists will go back and forth.

It’s expected that Mariah Carey, upon releasing her last album at Universal, will head back to Sony with Reid. There, she can rejoin her old catalog, Confusing? Sure. That’s why we love it! And meanwhile, Sony has the lead in the race between the two companies with Adele being the hit of the year. And yes, maybe, Sylvia Rhone will turn up somewhere at Sony after leaving Universal Motown recently. It’s all in the game, as Tommy Edwards once put it so succinctly. Meanwhile, no one says a word about Rick Rubin.

Mariah Carey to Launch Lollipop Splash Remix

Mariah Carey is remixing her fragrance collection with Lollipop Splash the Remix, a trio of limited edition scents set for a July launch.

The collection is a flanker effort to Carey's Lollipop Bling trio, which launched last July as a strategic partnership with Elizabeth Arden Inc. and Bazooka Candy Brands, a division of Topps Co. Inc. That partnership has since ended. Carey has been launching scents with Arden since 2007. Each scent in the new collection — Inseparable, Never Forget You and Vision of Love — is named for a Carey hit.

"Mariah is always reinterpreting and mixing her music, keeping her brand relevant," said Marcy Fisher, vice president, North America fragrance marketing at Elizabeth Arden. "She wanted to have the same effect with her fragrances, so she decided with this project to approach it from that perspective."

Inseparable, in a pink bottle with Carey's signature butterfly, has notes of raspberry, mango, pear, jasmine and orange flower; Never Forget You, in an orange-tinted version, features notes of jelly beans and golden peony, and Vision of Love's notes include French macaroon and purple jasmine. It is in a purple bottle.

"The fun notes are intended to demonstrate that fragrance shouldn't be so serious," said Fisher of the playful notes like jelly beans and macaroon.

Clement Gavarry of International Flavors & Fragrances developed Inseparable, while Givaudan's Claude Dir and Marypierre Julien did Vision of Love and Never Forget You. Each eau de parfum is one ounce and will retail for $35, exactly the same pricing as Honey, Mine Again and Ribbon, the three scents in the Lollipop Bling trio.

The scent trio will be carried at about 2,300 department store doors, and will be supported with national advertising this fall, as well as with a digital and in-store campaign, which will be rolled out at launch.

"Mariah's fans really love the digital aspects of her projects, so that will be a focus," said Fisher. "Also, the bright colors of the bottles really pop on counter, so we're planning an in-store presentation designed to emphasize that." Vials on card and scented stickers will be among the vehicles used for sampling, she said.

While Fisher declined to comment on projected sales for the trio, industry sources estimated that they could generate retail sales of $8 million to $10 million combined.

Mariah Carey is focusing all her attention on motherhood these days, but she hasn’t forgotten about her career. Monroe and Moroccan’s mother, who was playing music during the delivery of her twins, is already planning her next album, says husband Nick Cannon.

Aside from last year’s holiday collection Merry Christmas II You, the singer hasn’t released a studio album since Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel in 2009. “She’s been truly inspired by this experience and she can’t wait to get back into the studio,” Nick told Rap-Up.com. “She’s already been doing some preliminary work and meeting with a lot of producers and has tons of ideas, so I guarantee you can expect something soon.”

But one thing you shouldn’t expect is a collaboration between the new parents. “We might joke around and do something, but I’m not worthy to be in the studio with Mariah Carey. I do silly, jokey songs,” laughed the host of “America’s Got Talent,” whose comedy album Mr. Showbiz is now available on iTunes.

Nick, who’s working on a music album of his own with Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and Akon, bounces ideas off his wife. “That’s my best friend. Anything I do—she’s my toughest critic. She’ll say something’s wack, she’ll call it out like that. If she loves something, she’ll say she loves it. That’s my right hand so anything I do, she’s definitely involved in it.”

When they’re together, the couple listens to throwback R&B records and gospel. “We listen to a lot of old school stuff like The Gap Band and El DeBarge. The Clark Sisters—a lot gospel music goes on in our house.”

Those who can’t wait for Mariah’s return may get a glimpse of her this fall on Fox’s “The X Factor.” “Her and Simon [Cowell] talk quite frequently about what she wants to do,” shared Nick, “but she’s Mariah so she’s only gonna do it if she can do it her way.”

Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon Leave the Hospital

Finally heading home as one big happy family, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon were seen leaving UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, California with their twins on Saturday (May 14).

With the first photos of the new mom and dad together just having been released, the elated mom and dad were all smiles as they drove away from the hospital with babies Moroccan and Monroe in toe - nearly three weeks after their premature birth (April 30).

Mariah took to her Twitter to gush about their happy homecoming, writing, “Dembabies aka Roc+Roe are sleeping peacefully: )”

Furthermore, proud papa Nick revealed an interesting tid-bit about the newborns arrival into the world, telling “My wife wanted to make sure that when the babies came out, that they came out not only to a Mariah Carey song, but a live performance from Mariah Carey - her Madison Square Garden performance of Fantasy - so they came out to a round of applause.”
